The ranking, published by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, put the 2012 U.S. Horse of the Year, Wise Dan, second among all horses that have raced between Dec. 1, 2012, and July 14. Wise Dan has won seven straight races on the turf and 10 of his last 11, to earn a 129 rating.
The top-rated horse, Australian mare Black Caviar, has been retired undefeated.
Tied behind Wise Dan with 126 ratings are Breeders' Cup Classic winner Fort Larned and Game On Dude, both recent winners and at the top of their game on U.S. dirt and all-weather surfaces.
There remains a chance Wise Dan and Fort Larned will meet Aug. 3 in the Grade I Whitney at Saratoga.
Another American horse, Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom, also retired, is tied with Japanese-trained Orfevre for fifth place.
Following in a tangle with 124 points each are England's Al Kazeem, Hong Kong's Ambitious Dragon, Irish-trained Dawn Approach, England's Farhh, Japan's Gold Ship, Hong Kong's Military Attack and Irish-trained globetrotter St Nicholas Abbey.
