TORONTO, July 19 (UPI) --
A single by Ryan Roberts
put Tampa Bay in front during a two-run eighth inning Friday, sending the Rays to an 8-5 victory over Toronto.
Tampa Bay has won three in a row and 11 out of 12 in a surge that has the Rays threatening to grab the lead in the American League East.
Toronto took a 4-1 lead through three innings, but the Rays caught up on solo homers by Wil Myers, Evan Longoria and Kelly Johnson.
It was a 4-4 game heading into the Tampa Bay eighth, but Kelly Johnson opened the inning with a base hit off Brett Cecil (3-1) and moved to second on a sacrifice by Sean Rodriguez.
Roberts then singled Johnson home and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. A wild pitch put Johnson at third, from where he scored an insurance run on a double by Desmond Jennings.
Tampa Bay tacked on two more in the ninth on RBI singles from Myers and Rodriguez.
Rays starter David Price (4-5) worked seven innings to get the win. He gave up four runs on seven hits.
