MLB: St. Louis 9, San Diego 6

ST. LOUIS, July 19 (UPI) -- Matt Carpenter went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs Friday to help St. Louis outslug San Diego 9-6.

The Cardinals won for the eighth time in 10 games by scoring eight runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-3 lead.

Carpenter had an RBI single in the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly from Carlos Beltran. He then doubled home two runs in the sixth and Yadier Molina contributed a two-run double in the seventh.

Jake Westbrook (6-4) allowed two runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 for the victory. He also had three of the 14 St. Louis hits and scored twice.

San Diego scored three times off Carlos Martinez in the ninth before Edward Mujica came on to retire the final two batters for his 27th save.

The loss went to Jason Marquis (9-5), who coughed up six runs on eight hits with three walks in 5 1/3. It was his third straight loss.

San Diego has dropped 15 of its last 17 games.
