Mannarino reaches second round of Colombia Open

BOGOTA, July 15 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Adrian Mannarino defeated Alejandro Gonzalez Monday to reach the second round of the Colombia Open.

The ATP Tour returned to Bogota for the first time since 2002 with Janko Tipsarevic and Kevin Anderson the top two seeds. Both of those players received a bye into the second round while Mannarino had to work to get past Gonzalez 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.

Mannarino was seeded fifth in the event despite owning a mere 4-6 match record for the year.

In the other first-round matches played Monday, Santiago Giraldo defeated Carlos Salamanca 6-2, 6-4, Matthew Ebden outlasted Jimmy Wang 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 and Matteo Viola survived against Illya Marchenko 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.

Tipsarevic's opening match will come against the winner of the first-round confrontation between Nicolas Barrientos and Ruben Bemelmans. Anderson will face either Eduardo Struvay or qualifier Emilio Gomez, who has split the only two matches he has played on the tour this year.
