MIAMI, July 14 (UPI) -- Denard Span's RBI double in the 10th inning broke a 2-2 deadlock Sunday and the Washington Nationals went on to post a 5-2 win over Miami.
Jayson Werth led off the top of the 10th with a single against Steve Cishek (3-5) and was erased at second on Ian Desmond's fielder's choice grounder.
But Span (3-for-5, two RBI) followed by bashing a pitch deep into the right center field gap that one-hopped the wall, allowing Desmond to trot home with the go-ahead run.
Wilson Ramos followed with a run-scoring single and Chad Tracy capped the scoring with an RBI double for the Nationals, who avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Marlins.
Craig Stammen (5-4) collected the win and Rafael Soriano secured the triumph with his 25th save.
Derek Dietrich socked a two-run homer for Miami.
