Fabio Fognini picks up first career title with Stuttgart victory

July 14, 2013 at 2:33 PM

STUTTGART, Germany, July 14 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Fabio Fognini dropped the first set but staged a comeback Sunday, overcoming Philipp Kohlschreiber to claim the Mercedes Cup title.

Italy's Fognini rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over the second-seeded German crowd favorite in Stuttgart for his first career ATP Tour crown.

In doing so, he became the sixth player this year to collect their initial title -- Argentina's Carlos Berlocq turned the trick earlier Sunday at the Swedish Open.

The 26-year-old Fognini improved to 1-2 all-time in championship tilts after falling last year in Bucharest and St. Petersburg, while also notching his first triumph in three career matches against Kohlschreiber.

The latter was seeking to become the first German to claim the event since 1991.
