WASHINGTON, July 9 (UPI) -- Wins by Martins Hingis and Kevin Anderson helped the Washington Kastles tie the Los Angeles Lakers for the longest winning streak in professional sports.
The Kastles, competing in World Team Tennis, defeated New York Sportimes 23-15 Monday, running their winning streak to 33 games. The NBA's Los Angeles Lakers in 1971-72 were the first to win as many games in a row.
The Kastles' next series of matches is scheduled for Tuesday against the Boston Lobsters.
Anderson opened Monday's matches with a 5-2 win over Jesse Witten and Hinges followed with a 5-1 defeat of Anna-Lena Groenefeld. Hingis and Leander Paes teamed for a 5-4 mixed doubles win.
Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke defeated Hingis and Anastasia Rodionova 5-3 in women's doubles to give New York one match but Paes and Bobby Reynolds posted a 5-3 win over Witten and Robert Kendrick to complete the win.
The Kastles are two-time defending WTT champions, sweeping through both the 2011 and '12 regular seasons 14-0 and winning pair of playoff matches each year to run their streak to 32 consecutive wins. The team's last loss was the 2010 season finale to Boston.
