PITTSBURGH, July 2 (UPI) -- Jonathan Pettibone was effective over 6 1/3 innings Tuesday and the Philadelphia Phillies bested Pittsburgh 3-1, ending the Pirates' nine-game winning streak.

Pettibone (4-3) limited the Pirates to one run on three hits, walking three and striking out six in notching his first win since May 14 -- a span of nine starts.

Five Phillies relievers combined for 2 1/3 scoreless frames and Jonathan Papelbon tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 16th save as Philadelphia claimed the opener of a three-game series.

The Phillies broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the sixth on RBI from Ryan Howard, Domonic Brown and Delmon Young.

Rookie Brandon Cumpton (0-1) was saddled with his first major-league loss in his third career start for Pittsburgh, allowing three runs on six hits in a 5 2/3-inning effort.

Garrett Jones homered for the National League Central-leading Pirates.
