Ferrer heads into third round at Wimbledon

LONDON, June 28 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Andy Murray advanced to the fourth round and fourth-seeded David Ferrer gained a spot in the third Wimbledon with wins Friday.

Ferrer, playing Friday after his match Thursday was postponed by rain, got by Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Ferrer dropped at least one game serving in each of the first three sets but lost only five points on serve in the fourth set to put away the match.

Murray, playing under the closed roof of Center Court, beat No. 32-Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-4, 7-5. Murray dropped his serve once and won three-quarters of the points on serve.

The beginning of that match was delayed while the roof was closed and several other matches to be pushed back to Saturday due to rain.

Two other third-round matches were completed Friday.

Jerzy Janowicz, the 24th seed, eliminated 15th-seeded Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 6-4, winning 78 percent of the points on serve. Janowicz didn't face a break point after the first set.

Jurgen Melzer ousted Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Stakhovsky made news by beating defending champion Roger Federer Wednesday.

Grega Zemlja finished off a suspended match against 29th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, taking the fifth set 11-9. Play was halted by rain Thursday with the set tied 9-9.

No. 13-seeded Tommy Haas beat Jimmy Wang 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 and 26th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov was a 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 winner over Santiago Giraldo in second-round matches.

Jeremy Chardy earned a third-round date with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic by beating Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets.
