The Phillies rallied from a 5-2 deficit with Domonic Brown scoring on both a seventh-inning RBI hit by Kevin Frandsen, who was given an extra chance when a foul fly was dropped for an error, and on a two-run Delmon Young home run in the eighth that led to extra innings.
Neither team had much of another scoring threat until the 13th when San Diego reliever Tommy Layne (0-2), the eighth Padres pitcher in the game, hit Chase Utley to open the inning.
Layne got two outs but walked Brown. Ben Revere followed with a grounder to Forsythe's left. While he got in front of the ball, Forsythe misplayed it for an error that allowed Revere to reach first. Forsythe threw home as Utley tried to score but the ball got away from catcher Yasmani Grandal for another error and Brown also scored.
Joe Savery (1-0) who had pitched the 12th for the Phillies got the win and Jonathan Papelbon, with a one-hit 13th, earned his 15th save after blowing his three previous save opportunities.
Forsythe and Chris Denorfia knocked in a run in the third to tie the score and the Padres went ahead on Denorfia's two-run home run in the fifth and made it a 5-2 lead when Kyle Banks doubled in Chase Headley an inning later.
