LOS ANGELES, June 25 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Clippers said Tuesday they have named Doc Rivers as head coach and senior vice president of basketball operations.

The team said on its website it signed Rivers after the Boston Celtics released him from his contract in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Rivers compiled a record of 416-305 record In nine season with the Celtics, including an NBA-best 66-16 in the 2007-08 season, when Boston won the NBA Championship. His teams won six Atlantic Division titles and the 2009-10 Eastern Conference Championship, and went 59-47 in post-season play.

Rivers -- who played for the Clippers in 1991-92 -- replaces Vinny Del Negro, who was released following the 20012-13 season when the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, after reaching the Western Conference semifinals in the 2011-12 season.

In four years as head coach in Orlando -- where he was named NBA Coach of the Year in his first season -- Rivers led the Magic to three consecutive playoff appearances.

Rivers played 13 seasons in the NBA for the Clippers, the Atlanta Hawks, the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
