Estimate wins Ascot Gold Cup for the queen

ASCOT, England, June 20 (UPI) -- Estimate held on gamely at the end to win Thursday's Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in England for her owner, her majesty the queen.

Simenon was second in the Group 1 affair, just a neck back with a late effort. Top Trip was third in the 2 1/2-miles marathon when he was blocked near the finish.

Estimate, a 4-year-old filly by the German sire Monsun, was bred in Ireland by the Aga Khan and is trained by Sir Michael Stoute. Ryan Moore rode Estimate to her fourth win in seven career starts in 4:20.51. She landed the Group 3 Queen's Vase at last year's Royal Ascot and went off as the favorite on Thursday.

Her majesty was in attendance at Thursday's festivities, wearing a lilac ensemble and arriving by carriage with the duke of York. She was observed cheering on Estimate in the final furlong and greeted her filly in the winner's enclosure.
