Animal Kingdom soundly beaten in final start

June 18, 2013 at 10:36 AM

ASCOT, England, June 18 (UPI) -- Animal Kingdom ended his racing career on a sour note, soundly beaten in Tuesday's Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The winner, Declaration of War, worked through rivals in the 1-mile event and got home first by 3/4 length over Aljamaaheer. Animal Kingdom, the Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup winner, dragged jockey John Velazquez to a prominent position early but faded from contention late in the race and finished 11th of 13 starters.

Animal Kingdom now is ticketed for Australia, where he will begin his career at stud. He will shuttle to Kentucky to stand the spring season there.

Graham Motion, trainer of Animal Kingdom, said, "It's taken the wind out of our sails." He had warned that Animal Kingdom preferred firmer going than Ascot provided.
