MLB: New York Mets 4, Chicago Cubs 3

June 16, 2013 at 4:25 PM

NEW YORK, June 16 (UPI) -- Kirk Nieuwenhuis bashed a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth Sunday, rallying the New York Mets to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Trailing 3-1 entering their final at-bat, the Mets began a comeback when Marlon Byrd cracked a lead-off homer off Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol (2-4).

Lucas Duda then drew a walk and John Buck singled, with each runner advancing on an Omar Quintanilla sacrifice bunt.

That brought up Nieuwenhuis, who belted a pitch off the facing of the upper deck in right field for a game-winning, three-run shot as the Mets salvaged one victory in their three-game home series.

The rally made a winner of Bobby Parnell (5-3), who had tossed a scoreless top of the ninth.

Chicago starter Matt Garza hurled seven shutout innings in a no-decision, holding the Mets to three hits while walking two and striking out five.

Alfonso Soriano drove in a run for the Cubs.
