HALLE, Germany, June 13 (UPI) --
Defending champion Tommy Haas
closed second-round play with a straight-set win Thursday at the Gerry Weber
Open tennis tournament in Germany.
Haas, seeded third, defeated Ernests Gulbis 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 without facing a break point. Gulbis pounded out 15 aces but also had seven double faults. Haas converted just one of his 17 break opportunities but that was the difference in the second set.
Haas dropped only 13 points over 11 games serving.
No. 2-seeded Richard Gasquet easily advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Jurgen Melzer. Gasquet saved the only two break points Melzer managed while posting four breaks.
Also Thursday, sixth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber topped Tobias Kamke 6-4, 6-3 and No. 8-seeded Florian Mayer defeated Leonardo Mayer -- no relation -- 6-2, 6-3.
No. 1-seeded Roger Federer takes on Mischa Zverev while Haas meets Gael Monfils in Friday's quarterfinals from the top half of the draw. The other quarters send Gasquet against Florian Mayer and Kohlschreiber against Mikhail Youzhny.
