The newspaper reported Tuesday an informed source confirmed the Hall of Fame center has been hired to be head Coach Steve Clifford's top assistant. Ewing had interviewed for the head coaching job last year.
The Observer said Ewing and the Bobcats' management have reached an agreement in principle and an formal announcement is expected this week.
Yahoo Sports first reported Ewing's career move Tuesday afternoon.
Ewing starred as a player for the New York Knicks. He worked with Clifford when both were on Stan Van Gundy's staff in Orlando as well as in Houston.
Ewing also spent time with Washington.
Ewing, who scored more than 24,000 points in 17 seasons as a player, is close friends with Bobcats owner Michael Jordan.
