MLB: Detroit 5, Tampa Bay 2

DETROIT, June 6 (UPI) -- Max Scherzer went seven innings Thursday, allowing one run on four hits and striking out nine, to help the Detroit Tigers beat Tampa Bay 5-2.

Scherzer (8-0) allowed just two walks. Jose Valverde retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his seventh save.

Victor Martinez drove in three runs, including two with a fourth-inning home run off Rays' starter Roberto Hernandez (3-6). Miguel Cabrera was 3-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored for the Tigers, who took the deciding game in their three-game series with Tampa Bay.

Hernandez went 5 1/3 innings, striking out six but allowing four runs on 10 hits.

James Loney drove in both runs for the Rays.
