JONESBORO, Ga., June 1 (UPI) -- Former NBA player Mookie Blaylock has been upgraded to serious condition after being injured in a fatal car crash near Atlanta, doctors said Saturday.

A woman was killed in the wreck Friday in Clayton County and Blaylock was briefly on life support before being upgraded, first to critical, and then to serious condition at Atlanta Medical Center.

A hospital spokesman told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution the 46-year-old former player had improved to serious condition by late Saturday afternoon.

Blaylock spent 13 years as a point guard in the NBA and played for the Atlanta Hawks from 1992-1999. He ended his career with a scoring average of 13.5 points and 6.7 assists per game.

The cause of the head-on crash in Jonesboro was not immediately known. Police told the newspaper Blaylock's Cadillac Escalade crossed a median and struck an oncoming vehicle.

Monica Murphy, 40, was in the other vehicle and died of her injuries Friday night. Another occupant of the vehicle, Frankie Murphy, was injured.

Police Chief Franklin Allen told the newspaper Blaylock had an outstanding warrant for drunken driving but it did not appear alcohol played a role in Friday's crash.

A family member told police Blaylock has been under treatment for seizures, but the newspaper said it was not immediately known whether that was a contributing factor.
