SAN DIEGO, June 1 (UPI) -- Jedd Gyorko scored from second on Jesus Guzman's 17th-inning single early Saturday, giving the San Diego Padres a 4-3 interleague win over Toronto.
Gyorko provided a double that accounted for three runs in the fifth inning that tied the score and the pitchers took over from there, not giving up another run for 12 innings.
With one out in the 17th, Gyorko hit a sharp shot that hit third base for a single. He was sacrificed to second by Clayton Richard. Guzman then lined a 1-1 pitch into center and, with two outs, Gyorko never slowed around third, scoring easily to end the game after 4 hours, 58 minutes.
Richard, who had been scheduled to be the starting San Diego pitcher Saturday, collected the win and improved to 1-5 after going two innings. He was the eighth Padres pitcher in the game. Starter Jason Marquis allowed three runs and seven hits -- walking four and striking out six -- in 5 1/3 innings. The San Diego bullpen, including Richard, combined for 11 2/3 innings of five-hit shutout relief.
Toronto also trotted out eight pitchers, opening with Chad Jenkins, who was charged with three runs on just three hits in five innings. The Blue Jays bullpen chalked up 11 innings of four-hit pitching before the 17th.
Todd Redmond (0-1) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings. The only hits he surrendered came in the 17th.
Colby Rasmus hit a two-run home run in the second and Edwin Encarnacion led off the fourth with a homer for a 3-0 Toronto lead.
Jenkins hit Carlos Quentin with a pitch in the San Diego fifth and Yonder Alonso singled. After an out, Gyorko one-hopped the wall with a shot into the gap in right-center for a double. When the throw went home, Gyorko took third and a throw from catcher J.P. Arencibia was wide for an error, allowing Gyorko to score, tying it up.
