ST. LOUIS, May 31 (UPI) -- St. Louis Rams running back Isaiah Pead has been slapped with a one-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

NFL.com said Pead will sit out the first game of the 2013 season without pay. The Rams open the season Sept. 8 against Arizona.

He will be eligible to return to the active roster the next day. He also can take part in all off-season and pre-season practices and games.

Pead had 10 carries for 54 yards in 15 games last season. He was the 50th overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
