Nadal drops early set but wins at French Open

PARIS, May 31 (UPI) -- Seven-time champion Rafael Nadal staggered early but won in four sets Friday in a French Open second-round match.

Nadal, playing a match that was postponed from Thursday due to rain, got by Martin Klizan 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Klizan won the only break opportunity of the first set but Nadal amassed seven breaks -- three in the fourth set -- the rest of the way to advance. Nadal is 38-2, with finals appearances in all eight of his previous tournaments, in 2013.

The third-seeded Nadal also lost the first set of his opening-round match. He'll next go against Fabio Fognini, who he beat 6-1, 6-3 this year in their first career meeting.

No. 2-seeded Roger Federer, the only male player other than Nadal to have won the French Open since 2004, moved into the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory over 30th-seeded Julien Benneteau. Federer dropped only 15 points on serve and cashed in all four of his break chances.

Fourth-seeded David Ferrer also gained a spot in the fourth round, beating Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 7-5, 6-4.

Viktor Troicki was a 7-6 (14-12), 6-4, 7-5 upset winner over 10th-seeded Marin Cilic in a tight match that saw a combined six breaks. No. 23-seeded Kevin Anderson knocked off 14th-seeded Milos Raonic 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the day's other upset.

No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eliminated French countryman Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-2, 7-5; seventh-seeded Richard Gasquet moved into the third round by defeating Michael Przysiezny 6-3, 6-3, 6-0; and No. 8-seeded Janko Tipsarevic played more than 4 1/2 hours in getting past Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 3-6, 5-7, 8-6.

Ninth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka ousted Horacio Zeballos 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4; No. 11 Nicolas Almagro beat Andreas Seppi 7-6 (7-1), 6-0, 6-4; and Gilles Simon, the 15th seed, edged past 18th-seeded Sam Querrey 2-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

Other second-round winners Friday were 12th-seeded Tommy Haas, No. 19 John Isner, 21st-seeded Jerzy Janowicz, No. 29 Mikhail Youzhny, 32nd-seeded Tommy Robredo, who came from two sets down, and unseeded Nikolay Davydenko.
