MLB: Tampa Bay 8, New York Yankees 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 26 (UPI) -- Tampa Bay starter Alex Cobb dominated New York for 8 1/3 innings Sunday and the Rays avoided a sweep with an 8-3 win over the New York Yankees.

Cobb (6-2) took a shutout into the ninth inning en route to his third consecutive quality start, ending up yielding two runs on five hits. The right-hander didn't allow a walk and struck out eight.

Sean Rodriguez and James Loney each bashed a two-run homer for the Rays, who salvaged the final game of the series after falling in the 11th inning of Saturday's contest.

New York's CC Sabathia (4-4) was lit up for seven runs on seven hits over seven frames, extending a five-start winless streak.

Brett Gardner cracked a ninth-inning homer and David Adams drove in a pair of runs for the American League East-leading Yankees.
