SAN DIEGO, May 23 (UPI) -- Tyler Lyons allowed a lone run over seven innings in his big league debut Wednesday to bring St. Louis a 5-3 triumph over San Diego.
Lyons (1-0) was called up from Class AAA Memphis to make the start and he took advantage of the opportunity, giving up four hits while striking out four and walking one.
Prior to Wednesday no team in the majors had reached 30 victories for the season, but two of them did so during the course of the day and evening action -- Texas and St. Louis.
Jedd Gyorko led off the seventh with a homer off Lyons and the Padres scored twice more in the ninth against Edward Mujica on a two-run single by Alexi Amarista.
San Diego starter Burch Smith (0-1) continued to have a rough start to his career, retiring only three batters while giving up four runs on five hits. He had allowed 11 runs on 11 hits in his first two starts, but managed to escape both of them with a no decision.
