Top seeds ousted at WTA's Strasbourg International

STRASBOURG, France, May 21 (UPI) -- Top seeds Marion Bartoli and Tamira Paszek were ousted in Tuesday's first-round play at the Strasbourg International tennis tournament in France.

The tournament was rained out Monday but all 16 first-round matches were completed Tuesday, getting the tournament back on schedule.

Bartoli, the No. 1 seed, was defeated by Camila Giorgi 6-3, 6-2. Girogi had 16 double faults and landed just 44 percent of her first serves but was able to convert three breaks in each set to get the win.

Virginie Razzano was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over the second-seeded Paszek in 65 minutes. Razzano had two first-set breaks but needed four in the second to finish off the upset.

Seeded players were just 4-4 on the day with Lauran Davis beating No. 6-seeded Christina McHale 7-5, 6-3 and Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor taking the third-set tiebreaker to eliminate eighth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).

No. 3-seeded Alize Cornet breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mathilde Johansson and fourth-seeded Hsieh Su-Wei outlasted Anika Beck 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-1. Also, No. 5-seeded Monica Niculescu survived a 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) challenge from Marina Erakovic and seventh-seeded Chanelle Scheepers stopped Claire Feuerstein 7-5, 6-4.

Other unseeded players advancing Tuesday were Eugenie Bouchard, Anna Tatishvili, Magda Linette, Shelby Rogers, Flavia Pennetta, Misaki Doi, Lucie Hradecka and Johanna Larsson.
