San Francisco, Houston picked as Super Bowl hosts

BOSTON, May 21 (UPI) -- San Francisco and Houston were selected as sites for Super Bowl L in 2016 and Super Bowl LI in 2017, respectively, the NFL said Tuesday.

While San Francisco is considered the host city for Super Bowl L, to be played Feb. 7, 2016, the game will take place in the 49ers' new Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The 49ers, who currently play in Candlestick Park, are to move into the facility for the 2014 season.

It would be the second Super Bowl in the region, however. In 1985, the 49ers beat the Miami Dolphins 38-16 in Super Bowl XIX in Stanford, Calif.

The 2017 game in Houston would mark the second Super Bowl for Reliant Stadium, which was the site of Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004.

Rice Stadium, also in Houston, was the site for Super Bowl VIII in 1974.

The sites for upcoming Super Bowls are:

Super Bowl XLVIII, Feb. 2, 2014, East Rutherford, N.J.

Super Bowl XLIX, Feb. 1, 2015, Glendale, Ariz.
