Romo to work out on sidelines of mini-camp after surgery

DALLAS, May 21 (UPI) -- Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo says he expects to take part in the team's mini camp next month despite having surgery to remove a cyst from his back.

The surgery, considered a minor procedure, will sideline him for the next three weeks, The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday.

Romo assured that if the procedure had been done during the regular season, he would have been able to play the next week. Having the surgery now, at the start of the team's first off-season OTA, was "just about being smart," he said.

"This will have no effect on training camp," he said. "It [the cyst] was something I felt like was nagging me just enough."

The procedure was performed in April before the NFL draft. Romo was home the same day and said he was back at the Cowboys complex the next day.

Romo will throw off to the side during the OTA, but won't take part in team drills as he convalesces.
