MLB: Texas 10, Detroit 4

ARLINGTON, Texas, May 16 (UPI) -- Geovany Soto completed a seven-run third inning with a three-run homer Thursday, launching Texas to a 10-4 victory over Detroit.

In an anticipated pitching matchup between Detroit's Justin Verlander and the Rangers' Yu Darvish, the teams combined for 17 hits.

Darvish allowed three runs in the third to put Texas in a hole, but Verlander -- winner of the 2011 Cy Young Award -- did not make it out of the bottom half of the inning.

Texas sent 10 men to the plate in the third with Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre both drawing bases loaded walks to tie the game. Mitch Moreland then doubled home two runs and Soto finished things off with his homer to left that brought in Beltre and Moreland.

Verlander (4-3), who came into the game with a 1.93 earned run average, was charged with eight runs on six hits with two walks in 2 2/3. It was his shortest outing in almost 3 years and the eight runs he gave up equaled the most he has allowed in his nine-year career.

Darvish (7-1) settled down after a struggling start to get the win, surrendering four runs on seven hits over eight innings while throwing 130 pitches. He struck out six.

The Rangers won their third in a row and have captured seven out of eight.
