Nadal, Ferrer win second-round matches at Madrid Open

MADRID, May 8 (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer each won in straight sets Wednesday in second-round action at the Madrid Open tennis tournament.

Nadal, seeded fifth, defeated Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-4 by winning three-quarters of the points on serve. He was good on 79 percent of his first serves and faced just on break point.

Ferrer, the No. 4 seed, also saved the only break point he saw, beating Denis Istomin 7-5, 6-2. Ferrer outdid Nadal by losing just 10 points (42-of-52) in 10 games serving.

Ferrer and Nadal, Spain's favorite tennis sons, would meet in the quarterfinals if both win their next matches.

No. 6-seeded Tomas Berdych notched his 400th ATP match win by getting past Jerzy Janowicz 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-2 with a pair of breaks in each set he won and seventh-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took a tight 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2) decision from Robin Haas.

Mikhail Youzhny turned in the only upset of the day, taking out No. 11 Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-2 and will go against Nadal next. No.13th-seeded Tommy Haas earned a third-round match against Ferrer with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Tommy Robredo.

Also Wednesday, 14th-seeded Kei Nishikori beat Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-2; No. 15 Stanislas Wawrinka rolled past Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 6-3; and Kevin Anderson edged Juan Monaco 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4.
