Pablo Andujar upends Marin Cilic; Gilles Simon advances at Madrid Open

MADRID, May 5 (UPI) -- Pablo Andujar upended 10th-seeded Marin Cilic and No. 16 Gilles Simon also advanced Sunday, opening the men's singles competition at the Madrid Open.

Spain's Andujar bounced the Croatian 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-1, advancing to the second round at the Magic Box.

Simon, meanwhile, rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 decision over fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

Other Day 1 winners included Radek Stepanek, Fernando Verdasco and Jeremy Chardy.
