AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 3 (UPI) -- The Detroit Pistons said legendary NBA Coach Phil Jackson will be a consultant in the team's search for a new coach.

The team announced Jackson, 67, who won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and five with the Los Angeles Lakers, will join the Pistons in Auburn Hills, Mich., next week and help owner Tom Gores and president Joe Dumars in the search for a coach, The Detroit News reported Friday.

"Phil Jackson is a friend and one of the best minds in the business," Gores said. "We are thrilled to have him as an adviser as we make some very important decisions for this franchise. Joe [Dumars] and I discussed this and he and I are in full agreement that this is a great opportunity."

Dumars said he welcomes the assistance from Jackson.

"Tom and I discussed using a consultant as part of our decision-making process in our search for a head coach," Dumars said. "And we feel that Phil Jackson is a great resource to use. I look forward to talking with Phil next week."
