OEIRAS, Portugal, May 3 (UPI) -- World No. 228 Pablo Carreno-Busta used a three-set win Friday to join the top three seeds in the semifinals of the Portugal Open tennis tournament.

Carreno-Busta, a qualifier, defeated fourth-seeded Fabio Fognini 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and reached his first ATP semifinal. Fognini didn't face a break point in winning the first set but Carreno-Busta finished off four of his 10 break opportunities over the last two sets for the upset win.

He'll go against No. 2-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka in Saturday's semis. Wawrinka earned his second consecutive semifinal berth in Portugal with a 6-4, 6-4 win over local favorite Gastao Elias. Wawrinka lost 13 points in his 10 games serving.

Also Friday, top-seeded David Ferrer got by Victor Hanescu 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) and No. 3-seeded Andreas Seppi took out eighth-seeded Tommy Robredo 6-4, 6-3.

Ferrer draws Seppi in the semifinals. Ferrer is 4-0 versus Seppi, but they've only played once since 2006. Wawrinka and Carreno-Busta have never before played each other.
