Georgia to participate in 2014 Olympics

TBILISI, Georgia, May 2 (UPI) -- Georgia will not be boycotting the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, set to take place in the Russian city of Sochi, officials said Thursday.

Georgia had considered not participating in the 2014 Olympics because of tension with Russia following the 2008 war between the two nations, RIA Novosti reported.

On Thursday, the Georgian National Olympic Committee voted unanimously in favor of taking part in the Winter Games.

"I congratulate everyone that Georgian athletes will compete at the Olympic Games," committee president Leri Khabelov said.

Had Georgia decided to abstain from participation in the Games, it would have been the first country to do so since North Korea boycotted the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul due to ongoing state of war with South Korea.
