The New York bull pen turned in 3 1/3 scoreless innings after the Astros had rallied from a four-run deficit to tie the game.
That brought up Ichiro Suzuki, who hit a grounder to second. Overbay avoided a tag on the base paths and Suzuki was retired at first. Overbay was eventually thrown out, but because the force play had been erased Nunez was able to score the run that gave New York a 5-4 lead.
Boone Logan (2-1) came out of the bull pen with one out in the sixth to replace starter David Phelps and eventually picked up the victory. Mariano Rivera gave up a leadoff single in the ninth, but escaped further damage and claimed his 11th save.
Houston scored four times in the fourth inning off Phelps to tie the contest with two of the six base runners in that frame reaching when they were hit by a pitch.
