Ferrer takes three-set win at Portugal Open

OEIRAS, Portugal, May 1 (UPI) -- Top-seeded David Ferrer was pushed to a third set Wednesday before he could claim a second-round win at the Portugal Open tennis tournament.

Ferrer got by Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. He lost his serve three times in the second set but didn't allow Roger-Vasselin a break opportunity in the first or third sets.

He barely (17-16) won more than half of the points when serving in the second set but took three-quarters of the points on his serve in the other two sets.

He advanced to a quarterfinal against Victor Hanescu, who was a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 winner over sixth-seeded Benoit Paire in his second-round match. Hanescu was good on more than 70 percent of his first serves and won nearly 70 percent of the points on serve.

No. 4-seeded Fabio Fognini gained a spot in the quarters by beating Paolo Lorenzi 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-4 in a match that took 2 hours, 42 minutes. Fognini had the only third-set break, which was the difference in the match.

Pablo Carreno-Busta overcame a slow start and defeated Davis Goffin 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Fognini is to play Carreno-Busta in the next round.
