PHOENIX, April 30 (UPI) -- Ex-major league baseball player and announcer Mark Grace, serving time for DUI, was called a model prisoner by the Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff's Office.

"It is my understanding Mark is a model inmate and does a lot of volunteering with cleanup and other activities. He is looked up to by other inmates," sheriff's spokesman Joaquin Enriquez said.

Grace, 48, who played 10 years with the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks and later was the Diamondbacks' television announcer, has six weeks left in a four-month DUI sentence. He spends his evenings and nights at the Tent City inmates' facility, and his days as a minor-league hitting instructor for the Diamondbacks, The (Phoenix) Arizona Republic reported Tuesday.

"I am thrilled for him," said Derrick Hall, the team's president. "He is full time and will be with us long after June 10 [when Grace's sentence ends]."

Grace was pulled over in August in Scottsdale for his second DUI arrest in 15 months.
