Former Notre Dame coach Digger Phelps diagnosed with cancer

SOUTH BEND, Ind., April 26 (UPI) -- ESPN announced former Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps, who has been working as an analyst for the network, has been diagnosed with bladder cancer.

The network said Phelps, 71, has undergone surgery for the condition and will soon receive treatments at a facility near his South Bend, Ind., home, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

Phelps served as Notre Dame's coach for 20 years, with 14 seasons featuring 20 or more wins.

ESPN quoted a statement saying Phelps "and his family appreciate your thoughts and prayers as he prepares for the 2013-2014 college basketball season."
