ST. PAUL, Minn., April 24 (UPI) -- Charlie Coyle and Cal Clutterbuck scored 16 seconds apart in the first period Tuesday and Minnesota went on to post a crucial 2-1 win over Los Angeles.

Niklas Backstrom turned aside 22 shots for the Wild, who broke a five-game home winless streak and improved their chances of claiming one of the final two Western Conference playoff spots.

The victory gave Minnesota 53 points with two games remaining, two more than idle Columbus, which holds the eighth and final seed.

Jeff Carter scored and Jonathan Bernier made 23 saves for the fourth-seeded Kings.
