Ferrer ousted, Nadal wins at Barcelona Open

BARCELONA, Spain, April 24 (UPI) -- Top-seeded David Ferrer was beaten Wednesday but defending champion Rafael Nadal advanced at the Barcelona Open tennis tournament.

Dmitry Tursunov had three breaks in each the first and third sets of a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 second-round win that eliminated Ferrer. The third break in the first set ended a seesaw set but Tursunov lost only 11 points overall in sweeping through the third set.

Nadal, who has won the tournament the last two years and seven times overall, dropped 14 points in nine service games while beating Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 6-2.

Nadal lost his serve once in the first set. However, he was good on 91 percent of his first serves in the second while losing six points in four games.

Albert Ramos defeated ninth-seeded Jerzy Janowicz 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and Tommy Robredo ousted 14th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 6-1 in the day's other upsets.

No. 4-seeded Nicolas Almagro beat Ivan Dodig 6-1, 7-5 while fifth-seeded Milos Raonic handled Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-2.

Other second-round winners Wednesday were seventh-seeded Juan Monaco, 11th-seeded Martin Klizan, No 13th-seeed Benoit Paire and 15th-seeded Marcel Granollers.
