Italy sweeps Fed Cup singles against Czechs

PALERMO, Italy, April 20 (UPI) -- Italy took a 2-0 lead over the Czech Republic in the Fed Cup semifinals Saturday with singles victories by Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci.

Errani knocked off Lucie Safarova 6-2, 6-4 and Vinci followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Petra Kvitova.

Italy can clinch the best-of-five series with a doubles win Sunday. Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta will take the court against the Czech duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

The winner of the series will advance to the finals in November against either Russia or the Slovak Republic.

The Slovak Republic notched two singles victories Saturday in the opening matches to take a 2-0 lead in their Fed Cup semifinals series against Russia.
