MLB: Baltimore 10, Tampa Bay 6 (10 innings)

BALTIMORE, April 18 (UPI) -- Matt Wieters finished off a night of offense Thursday with a grand slam in the 10th inning that gave Baltimore a 10-6 win over Tampa Bay.

The homer by Weiters was the seventh of the game, blasts that accounted for 12 of the 16 runs. The teams combined for 25 hits.

Desmond Jennings and Evan Longoria staked Tampa Bay to a 2-0 lead with solo shots in the first inning but it took another solo blast from the Rays' James Loney in the eighth to forge a 6-6 tie.

Jamey Wright (0-1) went to the mound for the Rays to start a second inning of work in the 10th, but he gave up a leadoff single to Nick Markakis and was promptly relieved by Brandon Gomes.

Manny Machado then reached on a bunt single and Adam Jones singled to load the bases. That brought up Weiters, who hit the first pitch he saw from Gomes over the wall in right.

That made a winner out of Tony Patton (1-0), who worked his way out of a jam in the top of the 10th to keep the game tied.

The other Baltimore home runs were a two-run affair from Nolan Reimold in the second and a two-run shot from Steve Pearce in the seventh.
