April 17, 2013 at 12:47 AM

ST. LOUIS, April 17 (UPI) -- Alex Steen beat Cory Schneider in the third round of a shootout for St. Louis Tuesday, handing the playoff-hopeful Blues a key 2-1 win over Vancouver.

After Andy MacDonald scored in the first round of the tiebreaker, St. Louis goalie Brian Elliott stopped both Derek Roy and Alex Burrows.

Steen then took his turn and unleashed a wrist shot that got past Schneider for the game-winner.

Jay Bouwmeester scored in the third period and Elliott ended up with 21 saves for St. Louis, which kept pace in the battle for a Western Conference post-season slot.

Schneider made 35 stops and Alex Edler scored for the Northwest Division-leading Canucks, who fell for the second time in three games.
