Former quarterback Jeff Lewis died of drug overdose, autopsy shows

PHOENIX, April 17 (UPI) -- Former NFL quarterback Jeff Lewis died in January of an accidental drug overdose, an autopsy report said.

The autopsy found morphine and zolpidem, a sedative commonly known as Ambien, in Lewis' blood, and medication containers and handwritten documents found in Lewis's home in Phoenix indicate a possible history of prescription medicine abuse, Maricopa County, Ariz., medical examiner Kevin Horn wrote in his report.

Lewis, 39 at the time of his death, played four seasons in the NFL for Denver and Carolina, the Charlotte, N.C., Observer said Wednesday.
