Russian duo Volosozhar and Trankov win pairs skating event in Japan

TOKYO, April 13 (UPI) -- Russian duo Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov won the gold medal in pairs figure skating at the World Team Trophy in Japan Saturday.

They clinched the title with a 136.06-point performance in the free program, giving them 210.47 individual points overall.

Canadians Megan Duhamel and Eric Radford were a distant second with a combined score of 191.15, followed by Cheng Peng and Hao Zhang of China at 174.40.

The event in Tokyo concludes Sunday. The U.S. team leads in the event with 55 points, followed by Canada with 50 and Japan with 48. Russia is in fourth place, six points behind the Japanese squad.

Russia's RIA Novosti news agency said Volosozhar and Trankov selected a classical score by Bach for their winning routine.
