ANAHEIM, Calif., April 11 (UPI) -- Jean-Sebastien Giguerre allowed only a second-period goal and made 23 saves Wednesday to bring Colorado a surprising 4-1 win over Anaheim.
The Avalanche, owners of the worst record in the NHL, ended a five-game losing streak by defeating a team battling for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.
John Mitchell scored for Colorado 64 seconds into the game and the Avalanche took control with a three-goal second period.
Teemu Selanne produced Anaheim's only goal on a tip-in with 8:44 to go in the second period.
The Ducks, who had won their previous two games, remained five points behind Chicago for the best record in the West.
