AUGUSTA, Ga., April 10 (UPI) -- Heading into the Masters Golf Tournament, three-time winner Phil Mickleson said his apprehension comes from too much time off before the event.

"I'm a little bit nervous heading in, because I'm not competing the week before, as I have for many years in the past. Having that open week, I'm a little bit nervous," he told reporters Tuesday.

He chose not to compete in last weekend's Valero Texas Open in San Antonio, noting the course "was windy and tight, which is the exact opposite of how I want to prepare for the Masters. I want to hit it long and far and not worry about accuracy as much."
