BUFFALO, N.Y., April 7 (UPI) -- Nathan Gerbe
notched the only goal of a shootout Sunday and the Buffalo Sabres emerged with a 3-2 win over fading New Jersey.
In the second round of the tie-breaker, Gerbe came straight up the middle and fired a wrist shot past the glove side of Devils goalie Martin Brodeur.
Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller, meanwhile, made two stops in the shootout, including a game-clinching glove save on Travis Zajac.
Patrick Kaleta and Steve Ott each scored in regulation and Miller finished with 37 saves for the Sabres, who picked up a third straight win.
Steve Sullivan and Mark Fayne tallied for the Devils, who gained one standings point as they scrambled for an Eastern Conference playoff spot.
New Jersey finished the night three points out of the East's eighth and final playoff spot.
Brodeur ended with 24 saves.
