Fielder lined a shot just over the right-field wall for a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give Detroit the lead and added a towering two-run homer in the seventh that completed the scoring.
Doug Fisher (1-0) allowed six hits -- four in the Yankees' three-run fifth inning -- while walking two and striking out two. Tigers' reliever Drew Smyly retired all 12 batter he faced in earning his first major league save.
Detroit got to New York starter Ivan Nova (0-1) for single runs in the first and second innings, with Miguel Cabrera and Omar Infante getting the RBI. The Yankees went ahead in the fifth when Brett Gardner scored on a wild pitch and Kevin Youkilis followed with a two-run home run, his first as a Yankee.
Infante led off the Detroit fifth with a single and Austin Jackson walked. Nova seemed to get out of the inning with a double play but then hit Cabrera with a pitch.
Nova was replaced with Boone Logan, whom Fielder greeted with his first home run for a 5-3 Detroit lead.
Alex Avila hit a home run for the Tigers in the sixth and Fielder's second homer also came after a Cabrera walk.
