NHL: Tampa Bay 5, Carolina 0

RALEIGH, N.C., April 4 (UPI) -- Ben Bishop made 44 saves in his Tampa Bay debut Thursday and received plenty of offensive support in sending the Lightning to a 5-0 victory over Carolina.

Bishop, who has been only a part-time goaltender during his four years in the NHL, was acquired by the Lightning in a trade with Ottawa this week and promptly went to work.

He wound up recording his second shutout of the season and the third of his career.

Teddy Purcell broke a scoreless tie 28 seconds into the second period and goals from Tom Pyatt and Keith Aulie during the last 4:05 of the stanza boosted the Lighting to a 3-0 advantage.

Martin St. Louis and Benoit Pouliot finished off the scoring. All five goals came against Dan Ellis on 30 shots.

The Lightning began the night seven points out of the final playoff position in the Eastern Conference with five teams between them and the No. 8 spot in the standings.
