Burdette reaches third round in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C., April 3 (UPI) -- Mallory Burdette came from behind to win her second-round match Wednesday and set up a meeting with the world's No. 1 player at the Family Circle Cup.

Burdette, a 22-year-old American, began the year ranked 142nd in the world and has climbed to No. 104. Thanks to two victories this week, she will earn her first ranking in the Top 100 next week.

She defeated 15th-seeded Sabine Lisicki 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 -- finally earning the win on her fifth match point. Burdette will play her most significant match as a professional when she takes on Serena Williams in the third round.

No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki also advanced Wednesday with a 6-1, 6-1 demolition of Silvia Soler-Espinosa. Wozniack's third-round foe will be Andrea Petkovic, who got past Vania King 7-5, 6-4.

In other second-round action Lucie Safrova was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Jelena Jankovic came back to defeat Caroline Garcia 5-7, 7-6 (12-10), 6-3, Eugenie Bouchard surprised Laura Robson 604, 3-6, 6-1 and Julia Goerges ousted Olga Govortsova 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.

Venus Williams, in the final match of the evening, survived an upset bid by downing Monica Puig 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Puig, 19, was playing in only her second WTA event of the season.
