NEW YORK, April 1 (UPI) -- Ryan Callahan registered a shorthanded goal and three assists Monday, propelling the New York Rangers to a crucial 4-2 win over Winnipeg.

Derek Stepan scored two goals for the Rangers, who used the win to keep pace with the crosstown rival New York Islanders in the battle for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Rick Nash added an insurance goal in the third period as New York rallied from an early 2-1 deficit to break a two-game losing streak.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 26-of-28 shots to earn the victory.

Nik Antropov and Zach Bogosian each scored for Southeast Division-leading Winnipeg, which dropped a third consecutive contest.

Ondrej Pavelec turned aside 31-of-35 shots for the Jets.
